Threshold Alignment

I advanced four paces past the pull-tab marker to inspect the transition where the dark asphalt meets the smooth concrete apron of the garage. Lodged inside the rubber expansion gap was a discarded galvanized steel hex nut, its machined facets dusted with fine stone powder. I braced my boots against the asphalt edge, hooked both gloved hands around the heavy metal ring, and levered it upright into the joint seam. The low morning sun caught the internal threaded bore, projecting a sharp hexagonal shadow vector straight across the pale concrete threshold.
