A Coaster for a Slice
Balancing the slice of cookie cake on a paper cocktail napkin, I carried it carefully from the kitchen into the living room. The afternoon was quiet, and the low wooden coffee table looked like the most comfortable spot to settle. I found a round cork coaster resting near an open magazine and slid my napkin neatly on top of it. Taking a seat on the glossy wooden surface with my legs stretched out, I nibbled the crisp edge with the green sugar pearls. It made a few crumbs scatter on the coaster, but sitting here watching dust motes drift in the quiet room felt like the perfect way to spend the afternoon.
