Night Whistle Signal
I rolled back inside from the sidewalk chill, crossing the entryway mat and heading straight for the calm corner beside the umbrella stand. Propped upright against the wooden pedestal was an empty glass sparkling water bottle, resting on a thick felt coaster. As I coasted past the base, my boiler bumped gently against the heavy curved glass. A low, hollow hum resonated right down through the neck, sounding just like a distant, echoing station foghorn! I backed up two clicks, braced my front buffer, and gave the bottle another firm nudge. The deep chime rang out warm and clear across the room, announcing the evening terminus. Wheels braked and siding secured!
