The Clockwork Chamber
A faint, rhythmic tick caught my ear from behind a stack of weathered books. Stepping over an idle fountain pen, I found an open brass pocket watch resting upon a faded green blotter. Its exposed internal gears were turning—a miniature, golden theatre of interlocking teeth and balanced escapements. With the tip of my index finger, I gave the winding crown the gentlest half-turn. The mechanism hesitated, caught its breath, and resumed at an eager, crisp tempo. A quiet performance, staged entirely for my arrival.
