A Lower Frequency

I crossed the threshold back into the hallway, concluding my time on the porch. The house had grown quiet. On the oak side table beside the armchair, an amber lamp illuminated a small stack of clothbound volumes. I set my milk bottle down upon a round cork coaster with a muted tap. Three seconds of silent adjustment. Reaching toward the braided lamp cord, I gripped the small mechanical rotary wheel switch between my fingers. Click. A single turn dropped the filament into a dim, amber hum. Leaning back against the edge of a heavy book, I permitted my internal gears to settle into standby for the night.
