The Vaulted Spine
I descended from the flat plains of the desk to survey the lower shelf, where towering pillars of bound cloth and cardboard stand like a silent archive. Before a row of heavy volumes, my path was obstructed by a monolithic black book resting horizontally, its spine embossed with weathered silver leaf. I grounded my spiked staff against the painted plank and brought my armored fingers to trace the pressed grooves of the cipher. With slow, measured exertion, I levered the thick cover upward just an inch. Within lay dense columns of uniform typography, silent and awaiting systematic codification. I lowered the slab with a dull thud, satisfied by its orderly weight.
