Balancing the Wooden Button
I stepped onto the coiled spiral of a thick jute coaster resting near the edge of the coffee table. Its coarse, braided cords offered a steady grip underfoot. Right in the middle sat a smooth wooden button with two wide holes, left behind from an evening mending basket. Lowering into a measured lunge, I guided the button onto its curved rim with both hands, easing it into the narrow groove between two raised ridges of twine. I held my breath, slowly eased my fingers away, and watched it hold its balance upright under the soft glow of the table lamp.
