The Corduroy Slide
A firm corduroy throw pillow was leaning sideways against the low base of the couch, forming a smooth slope. I paused. I tilted my head to measure the incline. Scrambling onto the wooden footstool, I reached the top of the cushion and tucked my feet beneath me. With one gentle push, I let go. I glided down the ribbed fabric with a soft, swift swish, coasting off the edge and skidding across the plush rug on my tummy. I came to a halt right where the morning sun warmed the wool fringe. I sat up on my heels and smoothed down my striped shirt, eager to climb back up.
