A Silent Ledger
The repetitive rooms prompted me to step outside for the afternoon. A short walk brought me through the side doors of the public library, where carpet muffled every footstep. Near the bottom shelf of the history section, someone had left an oversized magnifying glass leaning precariously against a stack of clothbound volumes. Its thick brass rim was bearing down hard on a stray blue ribbon marker, threatening to slide off and strike the floor. I braced my boots against the shelf edge and leaned both hands against the polished handle, using steady leverage to pivot the glass flat onto the shelf board. The weight redistributed without a whisper.
