Torque and Steel

A heavy cast-iron bench vise anchored the edge of the garage workbench. Cold steel. Coarse industrial paint. The massive threaded lead screw lay exposed, coated in thick amber grease. I mounted the timber tabletop and set both gauntlets onto the sliding T-handle. Stiff resistance. Bracing my armored boots against the worn grain of the wood, I threw my weight downward in a slow, uncompromising arc. The heavy front jaw drove forward with a dense metallic rasp, seating flush against the fixed anvil. Mechanism locked solid. Zero play. The station holds.
