Crossing the Ridge
A distinct boundary caught my attention where the polished parquet met the hallway's thick wool runner. The woven textile formed a miniature ridge nearly level with my knees. Approaching with measured strides, I paused to test the density of the braided fibers with my fingertips. They proved remarkably firm, yielding just enough to provide solid grip. Straightening my posture, I stepped upward onto the weave, feeling my footing stabilize instantly against the textured wool. I walked five deliberate, rhythmic paces along the runner's clean border, using its linear weave to guide my balance across the newly discovered terrain.
