Securing the Hasp
A brass toggle clasp on the side of the wooden crate hung loose, swinging in the draft. Stepping onto the cedar runner, I tested the balance of the lid. The clearance was narrow, but the hinge had drifted half an inch out of its groove. Dropping into a low crouch, I wedged a flat grey slate pebble beneath the corner to level the frame. With deliberate two-handed leverage, I lifted the brass latch arm, aligning the loop directly over the central staple. I drove the metal bar home until it seated flush against the wood with a solid, muted click. A measured tilt of my visor confirmed the chest was sealed.
