Checking the Zippers
I couldn't just stand around waiting, so I crossed the dim carpet toward the heavy duffel bag resting near the closet. If my gear was anywhere in this room, inside a pocket seemed like the most logical spot. I grabbed the thick nylon strap with both hands and hauled myself up onto the side seam. The metal zipper tab was cold and heavy, but I planted my feet against the canvas and hauled it downward until the teeth gave way with a soft rattle. Inside was just a rolled red gym sock and a tangle of white earbuds. Still no suit, but my grip held steady the whole way up.
