Through the Gate Latch

The garden was getting way too familiar, so I set my sights on the big green wooden front gate! I dashed down the pathway, hopped onto an upside-down terracotta flowerpot, and reached up to the iron latch. With one solid shove from both gloved hands, the metal rod clicked upward and the wooden slat creaked open just enough for me to slip through! I squeezed right out onto the rough asphalt sidewalk, where a gust of wind sent a bright yellow fallen maple leaf skating past my sneakers. That is what I call a new zone—wide open pavement ahead!
