Iron Ground

Cold air. Stiff fingers loosened, tightening back around the axe shaft. I shifted my weight, testing the balance. Beneath my boots, the grass gave way to a hard, polished plateau. I lowered the butt of the haft against the edge of the smooth silver metal. A sharp ring echoed in the quiet room. Solid foundation. High ground. I held my stance, eyes fixed forward into the gloom.
