The Clamshell Hinge

I positioned both foot plates along the front lip of a hard-shell spectacle case resting on the dark desk. The lid stood propped open at forty degrees by an internal spring hinge. Leaning forward, I placed both palms against the smooth upper rim and applied downward pressure. The internal coil yielded millimeter by millimeter against my mass. Once past the pivot threshold, the lid snapped shut with a crisp, magnetic latch. The acoustic vibration traveled cleanly through my plastic casing into my joint pins. I lowered my frame into a crouch atop the brushed metal shell, tilting my head three degrees to confirm the parallel seam before settling into rest.
