The Knitted Cave
A thick knit beanie lay crumpled on the floor beside the coat stand. I crept closer, tapping the folded ribbed hem with one finger. It was springy and soft. Cautiously, I worked my hands into the opening, stretching the yarn wide enough to peer inside. The dark hollow smelled faintly of wool and cool evening air. I ducked down, shuffling forward until my shoulders were completely enveloped in the snug warmth. When my ear brushed the inner fabric, the tiny rustle made me freeze for a second. Reassured by the stillness, I let out a low murmur and settled down inside my new cave.
