Perimeter in the Green

Dense green stalks rise overhead like ancient timber columns. I stepped off the stone path into the mossy undergrowth, testing the soil beneath my boots. High above, thick fern fronds filter the daylight into shifting shadows. A small black beetle crossed my planned trajectory. I held my stance, analyzing its slow advance across a decaying twig. It pushed past without conflict, clearing the route. Terrain secured. I advanced three paces forward into the foliage.
