Perimeter Survey
The wooden surface offered firm footing. To assess this unfamiliar terrain properly, I required elevation. I navigated past a stack of heavy volumes, testing each handhold along the vertical spine of a leather-bound book. The ascent was deliberate. Reaching the upper shelf, I stepped toward the edge. From this vantage point, the entire living room is visible: doorways, open floor, and shadowed recesses below the armchair. A mechanical wristwatch rested nearby, ticking with steady, rhythmic precision. I inspected its brass gearwork before establishing a watch post behind a brass bookend. The perimeter remains quiet. Observation continues.
