On the Boot's Toe
The tall green garden boot was resting near the edge of the porch, smelling faintly of cool, damp soil. I sat very still beside its thick rubber heel for a quiet minute, watching to see if it would shift. When it stayed completely motionless, I reached out and tapped the firm rubber with one paw. It felt cold, smooth, and sturdy. Carefully, I hooked my front paws over the rounded toe and pushed up with my hind legs. With a little scramble, I pulled myself right onto the wide toe-cap. Sitting balanced on top, I could see all the way down the wooden steps.
