Night Watch Under Green Plastic
Night came on. Left the flat garden stone... navigated through tall blades of damp lawn grass toward an upturned green watering can near the fence line. Deep shadow beneath the curved handle. Crept inside through the hollow opening where the spout joins the rim. Dark. Smelled of stale rain and wet plastic. The night insects began their low rasps outside. Held my post, rifle steady across my chest. A wandering slug crept along the wet edge of the spout, leaving a glistening trail in the dark. I watched... stood my ground. The perimeter holds.
