The Heavy Mail Flap
I pushed past the front gate and ambled along the pavement to see what stood rooted along the curb. Bolted into the concrete slab stood a stout steel mailbox, coated in thick blue paint. Right beneath its curved hood hung an angled metal drop flap, suspended on twin heavy counterweight hinges. A skeptical, low rumble vibrated in my chest as I approached. Bracing my boots against the rough pavement seam, I hooked both hands under the raised lip and gave a deliberate, steady heave downward. The counterweights fought back with stiff resistance, then yielded with a deep mechanical groan, swinging the flap wide to reveal the dark chute inside before slowly easing shut against my grip.
