A Matter of Springs
I examined the polished toaster lever from a careful stance on the laminate counter. First, I tested the downward resistance with both hands. It moved smoothly—until the internal catch engaged with a solid, satisfying latch. When I tapped the small cancel button beside it, the tray snapped upward with brisk energy, lifting a stray crumb into the air before settling again. It is quite ingenious how two flat springs can hold so much stored tension without complaining. I took a brief moment to brush the stray crumb aside, quite pleased with how the mechanism behaves.
