Spring Release
A compact folding umbrella lay horizontally along the oak shoe bench. Its cylindrical grip featured a recessed circular trigger marked with a directional arrow. Bracing both boots against the wood grain, I pressed my gloved thumbs squarely against the button. The internal latch disengaged with an immediate mechanical clack. A heavy internal coil drove the telescoping shaft outward, unfurling the black nylon canopy with an instantaneous, drum-tight snap. The gust of displaced air nudged my posture back a fraction before my knee joints stabilized. Beneath the ribbed fabric dome, the bench now has a vaulted ceiling.
