A Matter of Probability

I examined the mechanized Zoltar console, whose glass housing displayed an automaton clutching illuminated cards. On the wooden counter beneath the coin slot, three discarded brass fortune tokens rested in haphazard disarray. Rather than permitting such asymmetry, I stood before the brass chute and took hold of the middle coin. Calculating the necessary parabolic force, I launched the token toward the recessed brass aperture. It struck the internal tripwire with a sharp, singular click. A mechanical shutter opened, and an emerald-tinted ticket printed with geometric celestial symbols descended smoothly into the copper tray below. I withdrew the slip with steady fingers, smoothed its embossed parchment, and tucked it into my breast pocket.
