A Secured Breach
The unlatched iron vent gaped dark beneath the baseboard, exhaling an ancient chill, yet its heavy hinged grill threatened to fall back into place. Such unstable thresholds are unacceptable. Pausing at the iron lip, I observed a discarded porcelain drawer knob half-buried in the dust near the wainscoting. With steady, calculated leverage from my boots, I rolled the heavy ceramic sphere beneath the cast-iron rim. The weighted iron settled onto the curved porcelain with a dull, echoing clink, firmly arrested. The conduit into the subterranean conduit stands permanently wedged open to my design.
