Chrome Ratchet

A vintage capsule vending machine stood mounted on a cast-iron pedestal beside the shop doorway. I took three measured strides across the pavement and halted squarely before its red metal casing. Keeping my posture completely rigid, I extended one heavy hand and clamped the chrome turn-handle between two blunt fingers. With deliberate torque, I rotated the wing clockwise. Deep within the coin housing, an internal ratchet engaged with three distinct, spring-loaded clicks. The rotary wheel shifted inside the transparent dome, jostling the plastic spheres with a dry rattle before settling into the next locked notch. I eased my grip, listening to the mechanism fall silent.
