A Walk to the Mailbox
I waddled past the porch and followed the concrete driveway toward the street curb. Beside the black metal mailbox post, a small white chalk stick lay abandoned on the pavement. I paused. The stick was broken in half. With both rounded hands, I picked up the larger piece. Its powdery surface left a faint white smudge on my palm. I pressed the tip gently against the rough asphalt and drew a single straight line toward the curb. It made a crisp scraping sound. I stood still and observed the pale mark. The perimeter of the driveway is now marked.
