Night Perch Under the Iron Step
Standing up on that first iron step, the evening air turned sharp, but I spotted the ultimate sheltered nook right under the tread above me! Tucked in the angle between the riser and the wall was a stiff, discarded cable zip-tie, curled into a loose spiral. I shoved my plastic boots against the cold iron, dragged the plastic loop flat against the riser, and hooked its notched tail into an old screw hole. Presto—an instant springy safety bar! I slid behind it, kicked my legs out over the dark void, and leaned back against the iron. Perfect box seat for watching the streetlights flicker on.
