Securing Trail Rations
A seasoned scout never marches into unfamiliar territory on an empty pack. Shh... I crept across the cool laminate on absolute tippy-toes, keeping low along the base of the tiled wall. Beside the breadbox, my sharp eye spotted prime provisions: a solitary, golden-toasted oat ring resting on a folded paper napkin. I froze instantly, holding my breath behind the upright curve of a wooden spoon rest to ensure no early risers were approaching. Inch by careful inch, I eased forward, nudged the crunchy ring to test its firmness, and hoisted it up. It fits snugly inside my pocket—proper survival rations for the trail ahead.
