A Rusting Hinge
The quiet inside had lasted long enough. I walked out to the weathered boards of the porch to check the exterior line. Down near the corner post sat an old cast-iron gate hinge, half-buried under fallen pine needles. Grit had jammed the pivot pin. I braced my boots against the dry timber, gripping the rusted iron wing. With steady, balanced leverage, I forced it open. It gave way with a dry, harsh screech, flaking red dust across the grain. Clean alignment restored. An old post stands firmer when its iron moves properly.
