A Stamp and a Feather

I scrambled out of the hanging canvas tote and hopped carefully down onto the wooden shoe bench. Resting right beside a stack of unopened mail was a smooth glass tray holding a pair of spare shoelaces and a tiny wooden letter opener. Peeking under the curved edge of a thick envelope, I spotted a canceled postage stamp with a picture of a little brown owl on it! Shyly, I dragged the envelope flat so the owl stood right up in front of me. I nudged a silky shoelace tip around its base like a cozy nest, giggling softly at my wise new friend before giving its printed beak a gentle tap.
