The Spool Bunker
My boots were thoroughly coated in gritty dust after snapping that sesame crust, and the late night chill was starting to sweep between the brick walls. While searching for a solid shelter beneath the slatted timber pallet, I discovered an empty, thick wooden thread spool lying on its rim like an ancient watchtower. The round center bore looked like a tailor-made vertical vault! I leaped onto the flared circular flange, gripped the smooth beveled lip with both hands, and lowered my boots straight into the circular core. The dense, polished birch wood hugged my back snugly, blocking the chilly draft completely. Resting my elbows on the wooden rim, I crossed my arms and watched the distant amber streetlight cut through the pallet gaps. Time to power down!
