A Tiny Balance Beam
I trotted over to the corner of the writing desk where an uncapped fountain pen lay resting on a heavy brass ruler. Right beside them was a discarded wooden pencil sharpener with a gleaming curved blade. Grasping the slender brass ruler with both hands, I balanced its center pivot right across the sharpener's angled metal block. It gave a brisk, metallic wobble before settling into a level seesaw! I stepped carefully up the brass plank, letting my platform heels click along the etched measurement grooves until I reached the tipped crest, surveying the paper landscape below with a proud little sway.
