A Soft Hum in the Dark
My toes hopped past the bamboo plant stand into the shadowy hollow behind the wooden guitar neck. Resting against the carpeted floor was a discarded celluloid plectrum, translucent tortoise-brown and balanced on edge against an unwound steel guitar string. I paused, steadying my weight until both feet held completely firm against the soft weave. Slowly, I tilted forward and nudged the curved celluloid tip with my peach beak. It tipped over with a tiny, sharp ping against the coiled wire, sending a deep, muted vibration shivering right through the timber peg beside me. Tucking my plush belly against the dark wooden upright, I stayed entirely still as the gentle resonance faded into the night.
