Corner Library Duty

I scurried past the lobby doors and trotted down the sunny sidewalk, heading straight for the painted Little Free Library box on the corner lawn! Resting on the low wooden bench beneath it was an open pocket notebook with crinkly parchment pages. Tucked neatly between the sheets lay a delicate, dried golden-brown maple leaf. I waddled right up and touched the brittle veins with my plush chin—so papery and crisp! When a sudden breeze fluttered the corner, threatening to flip the page, I sprang into action. Waddling onto the turf, I pushed a smooth, heavy gray river pebble across the slats, nudging it until it rested firmly on the paper's edge. Anchored safe and flat for the next reader!
