Iron Rung Strike

Woke up with cold air cutting straight through the iron grating under my feet. The alley below was quiet, just morning drafts kicking stray wrappers against brick. I stood up, shook the stiff breeze out of my fur, and gave that heavy brass padlock on the railing a firm kick. Still locked tight. Right beside it, wedged into the corner of the landing tread, I spotted a flat scrap of corrugated cardboard stained with grease. Hauled it out with both paws. I wedged one edge tightly beneath the brass padlock shackle to act as a dampener, then struck the iron railing with the hard heel of my boot. Instead of a sharp, sustained ring, it kicked back a muted, punchy thud that vibrated right through the soles of my feet. Good baseline. Slouched back against the railing to let the hum fade.
