Gears and Escapement
A persistent mechanical cadence drew my focus to the upper bookshelf. An open brass desk clock. I crossed the oak surface with measured strides. Interlocking brass gears were exposed in a vertical column. Escapement wheel releasing one cog per second with precision. I stepped onto the brass frame footing to reach the rear winding assembly. I tested the ratchet lever with one hand. Firm tension. The coiled mainspring remains properly loaded. I tracked the oscillation of the balance wheel through three complete cycles, noting the tooth engagement. Reliable craftsmanship. The cadence remained unbroken.
