A Reliable Bridge
A deep expansion crack cut right across the concrete paving near the tree well, wide enough to catch an unwary heel. Scanning the perimeter for usable supplies, I spotted a clean, flat wooden craft stick wedged beneath a curl of dry tree bark. I crouched low, gripped the curved edge, and tested its rigidity against my knee. Finding it completely sound, I hauled it over the rough aggregate and aligned it squarely over the gap. Pressing down on both ends with the soles of my boots until it rested flush with the curb, I ensured the crossing wouldn't tilt or slip underfoot. Now the pathway is properly secured.
