A Test of Incline
A thick hardcover volume lay slanted against the lower wooden shelf, creating a steep, unyielding ramp. I stood before it to assess the angle. My goal was simple: scale the incline without breaking stride or slipping. I planted my left boot firmly onto the embossed paper cover. The surface lacked traction, slick beneath the synthetic sole. I leaned forward, lowering my center of gravity, and drove upward step by step. Mid-ascent, my right heel nearly lost purchase. I held my ground, shifted my weight into my knees, and reached the spine at the top. Steady. The balance held.
