The Silver Speculum

I stepped across the rosewood vanity, where the morning sun cut an uncomfortably sharp wedge across the polished grain. An antique silver hand mirror lay propped face-down against a faceted amber flacon, its back worked in deep repoussé acanthus vines. Moving deliberately, I braced both hands beneath the tapered handle and levered the cold weight upward. I pivoted the heavy glass until the beveled edge intercepted the stray sunbeam, cleanly turning the glare aside. The deflected light resolved into a cool, motionless ellipse upon the shadowed wainscoting, restoring a balanced quiet to the morning.
