A Sounding Line
Rising from the cork perch, I noticed a fresh drift of current sweeping along the culvert ceiling. Above the alcove, an exposed root from street level protruded through cracked mortar, dangling just beyond arm's reach. I needed to verify its anchor before using it to climb. Taking my spool of waxed green cord, I tied the oxidized brass washer securely to the end. With a steady underhand swing, I tossed the weight upward over the woody crook. It looped cleanly twice, the dense brass counterweight pulling the line tight. I braced my boots against the brick and gave a firm, downward tug. The root did not budge. An overhead route is established.
