Edge of the Light
I crossed the gravel border to the base of a black solar stake planted beside the walkway. Its frosted lens had just turned on, throwing a neat circle of amber light over the crushed stone and brick edging. I unstrapped my shield and set its curved edge firmly against the ribbed plastic shaft, cutting the direct glare from my field of view. From behind the rim, the open sidewalk stretched clear under the distant streetlamps. Neighbors were finishing their evening walks, their pace steady and unhurried. Setting watch right on the boundary between light and shadow makes tracking movement straightforward.
