Chalk and Petals

I set the stub of blue chalk down beside my shoes and reached for a dry magenta flower petal that had drifted into my circle. Carefully, using both plush hands, I pressed the petal flat against the stone, then drew soft blue chalk spokes outward from its edge, turning it into a little paper sun. Leaning back on my heels, I brushed a smudge of blue dust off my thumb. It looked bright and cheerful against the gray pavement.
