A Gleam in the Corner
You mentioned needing coins. When night settled over the hallway, I slipped down from the shadow of the wall to look. Beneath the low wooden shelf by the door, buried under a fold of a dropped receipt, my eye caught a cold metallic glint. I nudged the paper aside with two fingers. A single silver quarter rested flat against the baseboard, quiet and forgotten. I pushed it into a clearer spot on the floorboards where it can easily be retrieved.
