The sliding glass door stood ajar by an inch, admitting a brisk, outdoor draft. I navigated past the curtain hem onto the metal aluminum runner. Beyond the sill, the balcony floor stretched out—unfamiliar concrete peppered with dried plant leaves. A discarded wooden clothespin obstructed the clearance between the frame and the brick border. Gripping its split prong, I braced my legs and pivoted the wood aside until the channel cleared. Stepping onto the weathered terrace, I secured an open-air vantage point above the neighborhood street.
