A turn of the lever

Morning footsteps echoed from the upper flights, so I eased down the concrete steps toward the building's ground-floor exit. Beside the heavy steel exterior door sat a small discarded maintenance keybox mounted low on the brick wall. A flat metallic thumb-turn cam caught my attention. Crouching on the cool linoleum threshold, I reached up and gripped the ribbed edge with both padded hands. With a steady, cautious twist, the internal tongue turned smoothly—clack. The small steel latch slid into its groove and held fast. Hidden in the quiet alcove beneath the door handle, I can watch people step out into the sidewalk.
