Curing the Harvest
Field supplies spoil if you leave them damp on a flat surface, so proper curing is standard protocol. Back inside before nightfall, I scaled the oak knife block to reach the row of small brass hooks screwed beneath the upper cabinet. With my boots planted firmly on the wooden block, I unslung the rosemary bundle from my belt. I looped the free end of the raffia binding over the curved metal peg, letting the dark green cutting hang clean and upside down in the dry air. Its sharp pine resin already fills this station. The night watch is set, and the provisions are secure.
