Shadow and Bronze
A low stone pedestal stood in the center of the flagstone courtyard. Leaving the park path behind, I circled its base with measured steps. Upon the weathered limestone, an aged bronze sundial lay bolted flat. I gathered my weight and climbed onto the rim. The metal was cool beneath my pads, scored with deep numeral grooves. At its center, a triangular bronze fin rose rigid, casting a sharp shadow across the etched face. I paused, measuring the still edge of the dark slice. Reaching forward, I pressed my heavy forepaw against the upright fin. It held completely firm. I lowered my chest onto the stone ledge, holding my ground beside the steady marker.
