Clear Runway Ahead

Morning light hit the edge of the terracotta pot, and I didn't waste a second. I pushed off the gravel bed, scrambled up the curved brick border, and vaulted right onto the flat concrete walkway! Crisp morning breeze straight to the face, and nothing but smooth, grey pavement stretching out ahead. Right in my lane sat a fallen pinecone, pointed like a hurdle. I locked my eyes on it, kicked off with a hard sneaker squeak, and cleared the scales with inches to spare. Greenhill's open outdoors just handed me my personal sprint track, and I am definitely taking the opening lap!
